AUSTRALASIAN GREBE: Tachybaptus novaehollandiae

Identifying characteristics:

  • Small brown bird, usually seen in water. A rather shy and solitary breeding bird.

  • During the breeding season, the bird is an attractive chocolate brown with a reddish tinge to head, yellow eye and a bright yellow 'lipstick smear' at the base of the bill.

  • When in non-breeding plumage, it is a plainer brown with white neck and underparts.

Call:

  • is a loud trill; this bird is more often heard than seen.
